I have an undergraduate Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, Associates in Computer Engineering. In my last year of my Bachelor's degree I took a Business Law course and spoke often to the professor (who was practicing law) before/after class. It made me decide to attend law school, and I was early admitted to Southern Methodist University School of Law. I graduated and passed the bar, and was then licensed to practice law in the State of Texas in 1999.
I actively practiced law for around 21 years, most of it running my own law firm. I handled personal injury (including slip and falls), family law matters (including some Child Protective Services cases), and juvenile justice cases. In 2021, I finally decided I wanted more time with my spouse and our dogs, and less time working. I found not practicing law did not abate my desire to read legislation, the actual legislation not the news stories conflating the legislation. And there are even times I find it interesting to read an Opinion of an appellate or Supreme Court. Since I was reading them anyway, I found that blogging regarding them gave me a means of putting my thoughts down and keeping my mind focused in an area I enjoy.
Since I reside in Texas, and that is where I practiced law, I find reviewing local legislation to be a simple straight forward task. And it keeps me up to date regarding any oddities going on around me. After all being semi-retired doesn't mean I don't live in this world. Federal Legislation is generally much more voluminous in each bill, less clear, and takes a great deal more effort on my part. However, I found doing it while practicing law important. I find the federal government to be more willing to step on the "toes" of states, and so it is becoming much more important and relevant in day to day living. Since it is longer, I will generally be writing multiple blogs per bill.
Because there are often short bills that require only one or two paragraphs, or perhaps a brief outline, to review; I will often have Subtopics for certain categories of bills. For instance, bills that modify the Education Act or the Family Law Code in Texas may warrant a category containing individual blogs over time that are modifying them. Texas works to be pretty basic in that each bill modifies only one Code. While the Federal government intermixing multiple things into single bills, there are still times when a topic may be relevant. For instance, masking or vaccination.
There are also topics outside of specific legislation that are relevant to every day life. Just like the legislative blogs, I will provide actual factual data and then my personal opinion. Things considered 'green' jump to mind because plastic bags, whether you should use a dishwasher or handwash, types of washing machines, etc. There are so many, and I was an environmental tree-hugger before it was popular. I've since found that some of the 'greener' ideas that were put out there are not actually better environmentally; although some continue to be touted as if they are. But you can find these type of topics in Other.
I have no plans to review bills from other states, but if you are interested please email me (jbwilliams@jbwilliams-jd.com) with a link to the specific bill and the reason you are interested in it. I will do my best to review those as well.
While I am not open to allowing comments to be created directly on a blog, I am open to hearing from readers. If you email me with a relevant comment, and state a screen name for use, I will be happy to add it to a particular blog along with any response should I wish to make one. Sorry but comments and forms on past website led to my reviewing dozens of comments daily that were merely bots attempting to find ways to advertise.
