A Bit of Background

The following backgrounds help summarize the author's views on both the general topic: Texas and more specifically Galveston County Treasurer as it relates to that topic.

Brief Summary of Texas

Texas is truly a Republic. There are a multitude of items that to modify the state constitution must be modified. So there are times when Constitutional amendments are on the voting ballots. While I sometimes abhor the wording, the concept that all of those legally able to vote in Texas must vote on the change is a good one. And bills in Texas are generally short, making it easier for everyone to understand.

Summary of Galveston County Treasurer

This requires the addition of a majority of Galveston County voters to vote yes.

Proposition 12 - Yes

Published: 2023-10-19

This Proposition is meant to abolish the office of the Galveston County Treasurer. The Commissioners Court may employ or contract a qualified person to perform the duties previously assigned to the County Treasurer. Or they may choose to have another government employee perform those duties.

This Amendment not only needs to not only pass a vote in the State of Texas, but it must also must be approved by a majority of the voters in Galveston County. So thankfully even if the remainder of the State believes this is a good idea, if those within Galveston do not, then it will not take effect.

They appear to feel this will save Galveston funds. There are 6 other counties that have abolished their County treasurer position: Andrews, Bee, Bexar, Collin, El Paso, Tarrant. Population wise:

  • Andrews: 18,610
  • Bee: 31,047
  • Bexar: 2,009,324
  • Collin: 1,064,465
  • El Paso: 865,657
  • Tarrant: 2,110,640
  • Galveston: 350,682

It is obviously not the largest nor the smallest of the counties abolishing this position. I believe a Yes vote is in order and if the residents of Galveston do not agree, it won't happen anyway.
